Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy involves removal of the infected pulp at the center of a tooth. After examining x-rays of your tooth to determine the level of decay or infection, Dr. Sultana or Dr. Gruber will anesthetize the area surrounding the damaged tooth and clean out the bacteria and debris from inside the tooth. Once the infection is removed, the tooth will be sealed, and, in most cases, a crown will be placed to protect it from further damage. At Smile Care Family Dentistry, we are often able to perform root canal therapy and prepare the tooth for a crown during the same appointment.
In addition to the restorative benefits of bridges, they also offer many cosmetic benefits. Visit our cosmetic dentistry page to learn more about how dental bridges can improve the appearance of your smile.
To place a dental crown, we first take an x-ray to determine the extent of tooth decay, and then Dr. Sultana or Dr. Gruber prepares the tooth to accommodate the crown. In some cases, a severely decayed tooth may require root canal therapy before we can place the crown. We will then take an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth. The technicians at our dental laboratory will use this impression to custom-craft the crown to ensure a perfect fit. When your crown is ready, it will be adjusted to sit comfortably in your mouth, and will be bonded in place.
To place the filling, the decayed portion of the tooth will be removed, and the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned. Next, the filling material will be placed and bonded in the prepared tooth. Then, the filling will be trimmed and polished to complement the shape and texture of your natural teeth.
